Description |
Interior of Waldemere, P.T. Barnum's house. Fireplace surrounded by elaborate carvings and mantelpiece stands at center. A large mirror hangs over the mantelpiece. Artwork such as paintings and sculpture fill the space and a large chandelier hangs down at the center. An upholstered chair sits near the fireplace and a panel with an intricate design surrounding the walls near the ceiling is visible in the background. Waldemere was the third home that P.T. Barnum built, and it was an elaborate Victorian home in Seaside Park. The location was chosen on the advice of Charity Barnum's doctor, who suggested sea air might help with her illness. In addition to the main building, the property had cottages on the ground including Wavewood which was occupied by his daughter Caroline, and the Petrel’s Nest which was for guests. The house endured for twenty years, making it the one that Barnum lived in for the longest. The University of Bridgeport sits on the former grounds. |
